Graphic design major Jocelyne Barchet has a passion for art and design, and her choice to attend UT Martin has opened doors for her endeavors.

“I was yearbook editor my junior and senior years of high school, and I really enjoyed that, working with computers,” Barchet said of her choice to pursue a graphic design degree.

Through her coursework she developed design skills and personal style, which she describes as dreamscape-like with “lots of color.”

Barchet was able to showcase her abilities through contests and campus presentations.

“I participated in a contest for the Student Success Center. They needed a logo, which they didn’t end up using, but I won that out of all the graphic design students, so that was pretty cool,” she said.

She also has a talent for painting, and in addition to currently working on a commissioned piece for a UT Martin administrator, she has had paintings printed in “BeanSwitch,” the literary and art publication published each semester that features student work, and won second place for a painting in a student art show.

As a student who is serious about learning, it’s no surprise that Barchet pursued and acquired an internship at Walt Disney World from January to August 2012, where she gained invaluable experience and knowledge about marketing and customer service.

“Ever since I was sixteen I wanted to do an internship there,” she said. “You have to apply online, you have to be enrolled in school.”

Barchet was accepted into the merchandising department and worked at Disney’s All-Star Resorts gift shops.

“My duties were to answer the phone and work the register, but also the fun part … I got to do ‘magical moments’ with the children. You play games like with the giant Jenga set, and I would seek out children dressed like princesses and ask them for their autograph. They would get really excited when you ask them for their autograph, so that was a lot of fun.”

Barchet said she thinks the knowledge she gained about customer service from the company that has a #1 guest service rating will greatly benefit her in the future and also hopes that the experience will help her with more opportunities with the Disney corporation down the road.

“I’m going to apply for the digital media internship, so I hope that working down there previously will help me get a step into the company,” she said.
