Dylan Powley always loved the outdoors, but it was not until he set foot on the UT Martin campus that he realized he could turn his passion for the outdoors into a potential career.
Powley is a member of the UT Martin bass anglers team. He has competed in multiple competitions, most recently the 2012 BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, where he and his teammate, Grayson Smith, placed 12th out of 181 teams from across the country. The team also placed sixth out of 43 on the team’s home lake outside of Paris Landing.
"I grew up around the area. It's [bass fishing] always been big on Kentucky Lake. But I didn't necessarily come from an "outdoors" family. My brother was heavily involved in bass fishing, but he only got involved in it around the age I did, around 18," Powley reminisced. "Truth be told, it was something I loved to do, but I didn't get into it, into the tournament atmosphere, until I came to campus and some friends referred me to the team."
To help Powley pursue his interests, he is working on a degree in marketing. "I want to be successful in the outdoors industry," Powley said of his hopes and dreams. "I'd like to combine marketing and business with the outdoors industry whether it be working for a lure company or an outdoor guiding company… just something in business, I'd hopefully be able to combine that with the outdoors."
In his spare time between his classwork and fishing, Powley and his brother are working on a small upstart business called Full Limit Outdoor Media. The Powley brothers help provide public relations services to lure companies and guiding services by helping with social media and press releases. While he considers Full Limit Outdoor Media a side project for the time being, they hope to evolve the services over time.
Of his love for the outdoors and fishing, Powley said, "Some people enjoy fraternities, some people enjoy other clubs on campus, and this is kind of my outlet. It gives me motivation to do well in school, to keep my GPA up. I've learned so much and I feel like I've grown not only as a student, but as an individual through this by learning about responsibility and accountability."
