Formerly a member of the UT Martin Women’s Skyhawk Basketball team and currently a nursing major and the new Miss UT Martin, Erica Glisson is determined to make a difference in the lives of others.
For two years, Glisson played for the Skyhawk women’s basketball team. While she loved bonding with her team, traveling to games, and her overall love of basketball, her nursing classes took priority.
Glisson’s parents both worked in the medical field, which encouraged her to pursue a path along a similar vein. Her father was a medical doctor and her mother was a respiratory therapist. Glisson grew up seeing how her parents’ patients were impacted by their dedication, and she knew that she wanted to be able to follow in their footsteps.
“I’ve always been interested in healthcare. I didn’t know I wanted to do nursing until freshman or sophomore year, and I started looking into it and found that it was my calling,” Glisson said of her decision to study nursing.
Of her favorite experiences in the nursing program, Glisson said, “My first clinical was a great experience. It’s the first time you get out there and your first chance to put to use the stuff you’ve learned in class.”
Glisson’s ultimate goal is to influence others to be happy and healthy in all that they do, and by becoming a nurse, she will have the opportunity to be that inspiration in the lives of others. Before entering the Miss UT Martin pageant, Glisson chose to promote Hoop It: Healthy Living for Life as her philanthropy.
Of her platform, Glisson said, “I picked this philanthropy because I wanted to focus on healthy living. I singled out basketball because I have played for 13 years.”
Glisson may be a talented basketball player, but it was at the Miss UT Martin pageant where she turned the table and took to the stage. Before the pageant, Glisson had never sung in front of an audience.
She said, “Considering Saturday night [October 26, 2013, the night of the pageant] was the first time singing in front of anyone, ever, I was pretty excited when I just finished without forgetting the words, let alone getting the honor of representing the University of Tennessee at Martin.”
Glisson will compete in the Miss Tennessee Pageant in June 2014. Go Miss UTM!
