The Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems provides academic credit for one term of supervised work experience as an intern. Students must enroll in the applicable course number to receive credit for the experience, and must meet course prerequisites and gain faculty approval to participate. A variety of travel-study and study-abroad opportunities are also available to students through the UT Martin Center for International Education. Students are encouraged to participate in these programs to broaden their understanding of the global nature of business. Those enrolling in travel opportunities may be eligible for departmental or university stipends to pay part of the expenses.
Internships are typically arranged by the student and approved by the associated department faculty member. Previous interns have spent time in public and private industries both on and off campus. The following skill sets are dependent on courses taken: most students take these courses during their junior and senior years.
Interns were taught skills in areas of advertising, brand promotion, personal sales, social media, customer service, inventory management and overall retail skills.
Interns were expected to complete four specific projects: deployment of an external college website implemented in a new CMS platform; implementation of a new Library Information Systems, WMS by OCLC; digital asset management-collection of small projects in the area of DAM and Digital Scholarship; and installation of a new computer lab designed around virtual desktops (VMWare View).
The intern’s primary role was to support strategy, implement tactics and track the achievement of three key pillars: increasing profitable sales growth year-over-year, increasing customer satisfaction and ensuring client retention.
Interns were responsible for recruitment: studying organization plan and objectives and meeting with managers to discuss needs and to establish recruiting requirements; manpower planning: overseeing development of human expertise in the organization to improve productivity and efficiency; and government relations: coordinating and interacting with government agencies and preparing correspondence.
Interns were expected to assist the marketing director and the assistant of marketing with tasks including advertising upcoming events, taking photos for social media, communicating with customers and booking groups.

Students manage the registration process, assist with the tour’s Stand Up to Cancer fundraising activities, manage the pre-event skins game and the in-event skins game, manage the round-by-round scoring processes for each flight, and manage the course for each round.
Students work directly with NFL personnel from the NFL’s On Location Experiences offices to manage player appearances for the events leading up to the Super Bowl, assist with post-game activities and assist participants in “on field” post-game festivities. This experience requires completion of a competitive application process, and participants are chosen by the faculty.
Students work with stadium and team personnel (Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals) to ensure successful execution of spring training games, with duties ranging from assisting with stadium operations (parking, security and ticketing) to assisting with on-field in-game promotions.
