Highlights for M:
M can stand for many things but typically represents the impact that UT Martin students are going to make on their future.

Development: M represents development; personal development, academic development, leadership development, community development, economic and sustainable development, and international development.

Focus: The program focus is on enhancing the interdisciplinary qualities and skills of UT Martin students by putting them in contact with key leadership persons and encouraging action. This translates into each individuals area of academic concentration + Town/Gown (City of Martin and UT Martin), Region/Gown (greater Weakley County and West Tennessee region), State/Gown (State of Tennessee) and Globe/Gown (international community). Our niche is that of enhancing the higher education environment through interaction and dialogue with external cultural, political and economic entities.

Application: Anyone may apply! There is an application process but we are not just looking for people with a proven leadership “track record”. We really believe that everyone has leadership potential and we strive to recruit people who are a bit rebellious, creative and unique yet humble and willing to learn. Students may apply at any point in their collegiate career.

Getting Started: The sooner you get involved the better. The best start is to enroll in our FYI (GENS 101) program and LDSP 321 (Leadership Through Film) your freshman year. Leaders-in-Residence scholarship recipients welcome.

Service: Any and all philanthropic support is encouraged but we specifically support: Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center (Dance Marathon), Cystic Fibrosis (Great Strides), Habitat for Humanity and Rotary International (Rotaract).

Minor: Housed in the College of Business and Public Affairs, the complementary minor, recommended but not necessary, includes: LDSP (Leadership) 321: Leadership through Film; LDSP 322: Leadership: Theory, Innovation & Policy; and LDSP 323: Global & Local + 2 additional 3 hour courses (15 hours total).

Workshops: Natural Resource Management, Energy’s Future, Logic, ROTC – Land Navigation, Ballroom Dancing, Public Speaking, Excel, Debate Techniques, Teambuilding, Priorities & Time, and Information Technology, just to name a few. M Workshops are open to any UT Martin student regardless of membership. (Some workshops are led by faculty/staff and some are led by senior M members)

SGA: We assist SGA with their Tennessee Youth Leadership Workshop.

SAC: We assist SAC with some of their Campus Crossfire debate forums.

WestStar: We are privileged to attend key WestStar (West Tennessee Community and Economic Development) workshops in Nashville, where we meet with the governor and other state representatives, Dyersburg, and Jackson where topics such as Economic Development, Education, and Healthcare are discussed with leaders in those areas.

Chancellor: We have an annual private dinner with the Chancellor.

Mayors: We meet quarterly with the Weakley County Mayor and have breakfast with the Martin Mayor.

MBA: We are actively involved with the Martin Business Association.

Past and Present Projects: Deconstructing Scrooge – Leadership Take on A Christmas Carol, Video recordings of our area’s Greatest Generation, Annual Masquerade (UT Martin Leadership and Alumni Banquet/senior send-off). We are in the process of helping develop a leadership training course for the incoming presidents of UT Martin Student Organization as well as a Regional Leadership Conference. Five students just returned from an international learning experience in the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Participation: Your participation is tracked in a co-curricular transcript that ultimately determines the funding you receive for independent international travel, extern/internship opportunities, and leadership support. You get what you give.
