The bachelor of science degree in family and consumer sciences with a concentration in family and consumer sciences education prepares individuals to obtain licensure and teach family and consumer sciences at the middle and secondary levels.



Why should a student choose the program at UT Martin?

    • Students who choose UT Martin’s program will receive personalized attention and outstanding preparation in both subject matter content and professional development skills.
    • The demand for family and consumer sciences teachers exceeds the number of graduates.
    • Employment prospects are excellent, particularly if one is willing to be mobile.


    Are there any special opportunities available such as internships, global travel, etc?

    Students in family and consumer sciences have numerous opportunities to participate in travel study programs to enhance their classroom experiences.  In addition, students who specialize in family and consumer sciences education will have early opportunities for classroom observation and a culminating student teaching experience in two separate placements. 


    What can a student do after graduation – graduate school, possible careers?

    • Students who receive licensure may be employed as family and consumer sciences teachers at the middle and secondary levels. 
    • Those who do not wish to teach may pursue other career opportunities such as Extension Family and Consumer Sciences agent, Extension 4-H agent, consumer educator, or educational materials writer. 
    • Graduates may also pursue further study leading to a master’s degree and obtain sufficient education to teach on the junior college level or become a career and technical education supervisor of instruction.


    What kind of student organizations, clubs, or honor societies can a student join?

    • Family and consumer sciences students may join any of the student organizations sponsored by the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.  These include the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences student group, the Fashion Merchandising Association, the Interior Design group, and the Student Dietetic Association.
    • In addition, any family and consumer sciences student is eligible for membership in Phi Upsilon Omicron (fcs honor society) upon completion of 40 hours of coursework and a GPA of 3.0.


    What kind of facilities and equipment will be available to the student?

    • Students in family and consumer sciences education will have access to a computer lab reserved for all students in the department.
    •  Classrooms have up-to-date computers and projection equipment as well as wireless internet access.  Students will also have observe and and engage in teaching experiences in the Margaret N. Perry Children’s Center.
    • Students will have access to the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the Paul Meek Library.  The LRC has up-to-date teaching materials and resources to assist students in all aspects of preparing teaching and classroom materials as well as housing copies all of the currently adopted textbooks.


    Does the faculty specialize in certain areas?

    Faculty members in family and consumer sciences have educational credentials and research interests in their particular specialized fields of teaching.
