Majors in the Department of Music are for those who love music and want to make a career out of their passion for it. The department’s degrees in Music Education lead into public school teaching (band director, general music teacher). Its degrees in Performance and Performance Pedagogy prepare students for graduate school and careers as professional musicians. The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree provides a well-rounded liberal arts education for the student wanting to craft his or her own degree program.
- The Department of Music is small enough to offer each student focused, individual attention. Its world-class faculty are committed to helping each student achieve his or her potential as a music, educator, and human being.
- The Department has a strong focus on academics and performance, so students in any degree program graduate with the necessary skills to be successful at the next level, whether that be the public school classroom, graduate school, or other related fields.
Travel with various performing ensembles.
Department of Music graduates have gone on to careers in public education as band directors and general music teachers. Other alumni have attended graduate school, earning degrees in music performance or music education. Many graduates also go into related careers such as music business, freelance performance, and church music.
Students in the Department of Music are very involved in their ensembles and applied studios. Many of them also find time to participate in Sigma Alpha Iota, a women’s music fraternity or Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a men’s music fraternity.
The Department of Music is currently housed in the Fine Arts Building, which contains practice rooms, a piano lab, and a music computer lab with MIDI piano keys and Finale software. Performances are held in the 450-seat Harriet Fulton Theatre.
