The bachelor of science degree in family and consumer sciences with a concentration in interior design prepares students to assume positions in interior design related careers including the areas of  drafting, designing, and specifying materials for both residential and commercial interiors.



Why should a student choose the program at UT Martin?

    • Students who choose UT Martin’s program will receive personalized attention and outstanding preparation in both subject matter content and professional development skills. 

    • The program allows students opportunities to shape their course of study to meet specific goals.

    Are there any special opportunities available such as internships, global travel, etc?

    • Students in family and consumer sciences have numerous opportunities to participate in travel study programs to enhance their classroom experiences.
    •  Students have the opportunity to complete supervised field experience during  their  sophomore and senior years.

    What can a student do after graduation – graduate school, possible careers?

    Students may choose from a variety of careers in the interior design area.  These include junior interior designer, materials specifier, design consultant, job installation supervisor, product representative, and furniture buyer.


    What kind of student organizations, clubs, or honor societies can a student join?

    • The Interior Design student group offers students studying interior design an opportunity to participate in interior design related activities and professional development.
    • In addition , any family and consumer sciences student is eligible for membership in Phi Upsilon Omicron (fcs honor society) upon completion of 40 hours of coursework and a GPA of 3.0.

    What kind of facilities and equipment will be available to the student?

    • Students studying interior design have access to a design lab with drafting equipment.
    • A resource room with fabric, wall covering, and floor covering materials is available.
    • Classrooms have the latest audio visual equipment (computers, projectors, image capturing equipment, DVD players) to facilitate effective teaching and learning.
    • Wireless internet access is available throughout our building.

    Does the faculty specialize in certain areas?

    Faculty members in family and consumer sciences have educational credentials and research interests in their particular specialized fields of teaching.
