At a glance:


Students can learn Japanese through speaking, listening, reading and writing. They also learn about Japanese culture. Students can experience Japan during the annual 10-day travel study or study abroad programs.


Why should a student choose the program at UT Martin?


Students can learn the language and culture through classes and also can spend 1 semester or 2 semesters at our partner institutions in Japan. They may also participate in the 10-day travel study program. There are over 100 Japanese companies located around UTM. The Japanese consulate has also recently moved from New Orleans to Nashville.


Are there any special opportunities available such as internships, global travel, etc?


Students can study Japanese for 1 to 2 semesters at our partner institutions in Japan. Students can participate in a 10-day travel study, which allows students experience daily life with a typical Japanese family and also take part in classes at our partner university, Hirosaki University, Japan.


What can a student do after graduation – graduate school, possible careers?


Students of Japanese can go on to the JET program, to work for the many Japanese companies in Tennessee, or to jobs related to the Japanese consulate that was recently opened in Nashville.


What kind of student organizations, clubs, or honor societies can a student join?


The Japanese Club and the Martin Japanese Karate Dojo


What kind of facilities and equipment will be available to the student?


Tech classrooms and a state of the art language laboratory foster the acquisition of German at the lower and upper division courses.


Does the faculty specialize in certain areas?
