Majors in the Department of Music are for those who love music and want to make a career out of their passion for it. The department’s degrees in Music Education lead into public school teaching (band director, choir director, general music teacher).


Why should a student choose the program at UT Martin?


  • The Department of Music is small enough to offer each student focused, individual attention. Its world-class faculty are committed to helping each student achieve his or her potential as a music, educator, and human being.

  • The Department has a strong focus on academics and performance, so students in any degree program graduate with the necessary skills to be successful at the next level, whether that be the public school classroom, graduate school, or other related fields.

Are there any special opportunities available such as internships, global travel, etc?


Travel with various performing ensembles.


What can a student do after graduation – graduate school, possible careers?


Department of Music graduates have gone on to careers in public education as band directors, choir directors, and general music teachers. Other alumni have attended graduate school, earning degrees in music performance or music education. Many graduates also go into related careers such as music business, freelance performance, and church music.


What kind of student organizations, clubs, or honor societies can a student join?


Students in the Department of Music are very involved in their ensembles and applied studios. Many of them also find time to participate in Sigma Alpha Iota, a women’s music fraternity or Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a men’s music fraternity.


What kind of facilities and equipment will be available to the student?


The Department of Music is currently housed in the Fine Arts Building, which contains practice rooms, a piano lab, and a music computer lab with MIDI piano keys and Finale software. Performances are held in the 450-seat Harriet Fulton Theatre.
