Why should a student choose the Theatre program at UT Martin?

The Theatre emphasis at UT Martin prepares students for careers in the theatre and associated fields by establishing a safe and nurturing environment for the young artist that allows for sufficient opportunities necessary to emerge from his or her experience at UT Martin more knowledgeable, confident, sensitive, and aware of the benefits of cooperating and sharing with others.  Students that undertake the Theatre emphasis at UT Martin learn and work at a professional level that leads them to success in a number of related fields in the entertainment industry.

Are there any special opportunities available?

In our program, you’ll be given ample opportunity for performing.  We believe you can’t succeed unless you participate.  These opportunities include Vanguard Theatre, professional performance auditions, off-campus performances, festivals, and other activities sponsored through Alpha Psi Omega (National Theatre Honor Society).

What can a student do after graduation – graduate school, possible careers?

The study of Theatre and Drama equips students with a broad range of communication and organizational skills applicable to many careers, including those in the performing arts.  The theatre student’s presentation skills, ability to face the public, and control of voice and body provide a solid basis for working effectively with others.  Students develop and hone organizational abilities, analytical techniques, and critical thinking.  A partial list of wide-ranging career paths for students in theatre based on research from the University of Michigan includes human services, fundraising, drama therapy, criticism/review, research, interviewer, retail management, theatre technology, arts and entertainment management, stage management, editing, public relations, audience development, military intelligence, government, and teaching.

What kind of student organizations, clubs, or honor societies can a student join?

Opportunities for membership in associated student organizations are an important part of student development.  The Visual Arts Society (Art, Art Education, and Graphic Design) and Alpha Psi Omega (National Theatre Honor Society) support the efforts of the department and are important in the professional growth of students.

What kind of facilities and equipment will be available to the student?

The Fine Arts Building, opened in 1970, is an attractive facility which provides teaching and rehearsal spaces for the theatre and music programs. Facilities for theatre include a rehearsal hall, laboratory theatre, dressing rooms, costume laboratory, and scene shop, as well as faculty offices. The 450-seat Harriet Fulton Theatre is the setting for all Vanguard Theatre main stage performances.

Does the faculty specialize in certain areas?

Ken Zimmerman is currently the principle instructor of theatre and director of Vanguard Theatre, the department’s theatre performance company.  Vanguard Theatre has a very long and impressive history at UT Martin, earning a reputation for artistic excellence known throughout the state.  Mr. Zimmerman is the former artistic director for Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, TN and continues as an honored professional actor and director throughout the region.  He was recognized in 2006 with the Eugart Yerian Award for Lifetime Service to Memphis Theatre by the Memphis Arts Council and Memphis Magazine.
