Member Spotlight
Name- Otha Britton
Tell me about your pets. Actually, they are my wife’s pets. I hate cats, but we have always had them. If one disappears, another shows up on the porch within a week. Currently we have White Leg and Archie.
Children- Dawn is a chemical engineer working in the Philadelphia area. Carla is a UT Martin graduate in accounting and works in the Atlanta area. John is a sophomore here at UT Martin and is majoring in computer science. He is 18 years younger than Dawn!
Job-UTM Dept. of Computer Science and Information Systems
High School- Portales High School-Portales, New Mexico, 1963.
College-Eastern New Mexico University (B.S. 1967), Drexel University (M.S. 1969, Ph.D. 1972), UT Knoxville (Postdoctoral work, 1979)
Why did you join Kiwanis? The Portales Kiwanis Club paid my way through college with a scholarship, so I knew Kiwanis did good work. Jim Westmoreland (a charter member of the Martin club) and Bill Austin co-sponsored me for membership in 1978.
Favorite Kiwanis memory-One Christmas, Harry Henderson and I both hitched our trucks to trailers and started slowly pulling Kiwanis carolers around town. It was very cold. Things went well until Harry decided to take them over to Scenic Hills. Harry decided not to waste any time, so he whipped his truck up to about 40 miles per hour. I could see his load of Kiwanians pulling blankets over their heads and yelling at Harry. When we arrived with my load of carolers across from McDonalds, Harry had stopped by the side of the road to wait for us. They finally thawed out enough to groan for a while and then to say they were finished caroling. We haven’t been caroling since!!!
Favorite Kiwanis activity- I suppose that Pancake Day might be my favorite. Although I don’t like selling the tickets, I do like working at the breakfast, in spite of Keith and Pete’s singing. Working with a large group of Kiwanians and at the same time getting to see a large number of friends enjoying the food and fellowship make for a great experience.
