THE MURIEL D.TOMLINSON MEMORIAL LECTURES:
Muriel Tomlinson came to UT Martin in 1959 after receiving her PhD from Duke University. She taught French and Spanish in the English Department and was instrumental in the establishment of what is now the Department of Modern Foreign Languages. Dr. Tomlinson chaired the department from 1962 until 1976. Under her tutelage, the department grew from two faculty members to six and offered majors in French and Spanish as well as minors in French, German, and Spanish. Professor Tomlinson was a firm believer in the role of technology as a learning aid for students and developed the first language laboratory on campus. Dr. Tomlinson, a staunch supporter of the ideals of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, retired from the university in 1976.

To honor the memory of Dr. Muriel Tomlinson, a loyal member of Phi Kappa Phi who died in 1976, a distinguished faculty in the Humanities presents the Muriel D. Tomlinson Memorial Lecture each year. Another faculty member is chosen each year as the Phi Kappa Phi Lecturer, giving one lecture on this campus.
