In Hemingway's story, the old waiter was very sympathic. I believe that he was the way he was because he knew how the old drunk felt. He knew what it was like to not want to go home to an empty house. He was a lot more comfortable being around people, even if it had to be at work. The younger waiter could not sympathize with either of them because he had not experinced complete lonliness yet. I believe you really cant understand how someone feels until you've been in their shoes;therefore, I think Hemingway's style is very appropriate.
