In the Rocking Horse Winner, the voices were very distinct. I believe the only way the voices would stop is by the parents giving up on the love of money. When you love something as much as they did, you cant get enough.
The mother's response was that she wanted all of the money at the same time. The effect that it had on Paul was that it was not enough. That's why he kept trying so hard to get more. He wanted to satisfy her because once he had, then maybe she would consider him with luck.
His dry spell came when his horse was taken away. Once he got it back, he thought he had the luck back.
