    In the Rocking Horse Winner I believe the voices that the boy heard kept getting worse because he felt he had to be "lucky" for his mother to have money. On page 520 when the mother receives the letter about the money, she immediately goes to the lawyer to see if she could have it all at once. Her greed is so great that it makes the boy think he has to make more money just to keep her satisfied.
