    The mother's birthday gift was of nothing to the mother because she went and spent it all on things she probably could have lived without. She didn't really know where the money was coming from so she spent it on herself instead of the debt the family owes. It had a bad effect on Paul because it made him hear the voices louder and more often. The voices caused him to worry himself and made die of trying to rid himself of them.
