    I think it is really sad that Paul tried to give his mother the money that he had won and she spent it so foolishly. Paul was trying to help her get out of debt but she was set on making their family look as though they were rich when they really weren't. I think this made Paul feel that his gift wasn't enough for his mom. He felt like he had to be "lucky" in order for his family to be happy.
