    Paul was a "poor devil" in the sense that his mother did not love him and he felt that to win her love he must win the money. Paul`s mother bought him toys and nice clothes to appear wealthy on the outside. Paul is also a "poor devil" because he did have a talent for picking winners, but because of his early death that talent was wasted. In spite of his mother Paul was a very lucky guy.
