Yes, by "unrealistic" I am referring to his knowing the winners; but also to the way we are told things that in most stories we have to observe for ourselves. When Paul "knows" the winners, he is always right; the mother acts as if she loves her children very much--only she and they (and we!) know that "It was not so" (513). The point is that we don't have to discover these things, as in real life we do; we are told that they are so.
