English 112 BBoard
Bulletin Board for English 112, Section 24
This format emphasizes your written contributions to the discussion of the
work we are looking at in class each week, and should give you time to
think about what you want to say and contribute it quickly. Remember that
you are only "present" if you contribute to the discussion, and those who
contribute more, and more thoughtful comments, will get higher marks for
participation. Use your real name, not an alias, and your real e-mail
address. I would encourage you to work in groups--as long as your groups
stay on topic. Talk amongst yourselves, as they say, and then post your
considered comments to the bulletin board. Make specific reference to
the parts of the work that support your observations.
A Doll House
by Henrik Ibsen (Lit 1185-1241).
- Did the play strike you as radical? What do you think of this
bit of information?
- Do you think that the play depends too much upon that gimmick of the letter locked in a letter box to which only Torvald has the key? Does this dramatic device lessen the moral impact?
- Why did Ibsen include Nora's macaroon-eating as part of her character?
- What functions do the minor characters--Dr. Rank, Krogstad, & Mrs. Linde--serve?
- Is it really possible that the flightly little "squirrel" and "lark" of Act I can also be the same person who strikes out on her own at the end of the play?
- If you have seen a live or film production of the play, tell us how you think it worked theatrically.
- Is Nora's decision morally justifiable?
- If you think so, how can she justify leaving her children?
- If you think not, how can she continue to live with someone who has
betrayed her as completely as Torvald has?
