What is the significance of Mill and Newman beyond the scope of their influence of others? "On Liberty" by Mill, although it was not required reading, is used in philosophy because of Mill's Utilitarian nature. Is it the contrast between the works of Mill and Cardinal Newman that is notworthy, or is it the mechanical structure of their prose that we should note? Or ar they just examples of Victorian writers who influenced the heavyweights of the period?
