In Yeats' poem "A Prayer for My Daughter" he seems to be saying that although he wants his daughter to be intelligent, he wants her to keep it hidden so it doesn't end up hurting her. Was this a shared consensus among most men at the time or did most just wish that their daughters would not be intelligent and only attractive?
