Up until the 17th century, most of the literature we have read has dealt with the Christian God. In Milton's companion poems, L'Allegro and Il Penseroso, he uses several references to the mythical greek gods. In Paradise Lost he reverts back to writing about the Christian God. Is this because he wrote the companion poems in his earlier, more romantic years, before many of the hardships in his life? If so, was he writing about the Christian God because he had been humbled by the trials of his life?
