We should be careful about drawing a distinction
between "good ole boys" and people with ideas. The
problem with the South for too long was not that its
politicians lacked creativity or imagination, but that
its politicians used their considerable cleverness to
promote schemes that denied equal opportunity to
African-Americans. The ideas were present; racial
justice was not.
