David raises an interesting point and alludes to a significant question: How "Americanized" has the South become? On issues of race, the distinction between the region and the rest of the country may no longer be recognizable. Various civil rights leaders preached that theme 30 years ago: Malcolm X, for instance, suggested that "the South" started just below the Canadian border. Others have argued that attempts at school integration did not seriously fail until policy makers tried to enforce it on northern suburbs. As a life-long resident of the South, I will throw this question to those of you who have lived both inside and outside the region. .
