last wednesday's panel presentations brought up some interesting points. sorry i must warn you, i write in all lowercase letters..."e.e. cummings" style. anyway, the south, unlike any other region of the united states, has a strong sense of nationalism. southerners see the south as a nation within itself. think about it, do people from nevada, new mexico, arizona, and utah consider themselves "south westerners". of course not. changing gears.....why are southerners so regionalistic? well, after the civil war, the south was literally in ruins, economically, socially, etc. when individuals go through severe and trying times (civil war) they run to their comfort zones. southerners longed for the times before the war when life was grand and romantic. well that is all for now. i hope this will possibly stir up some discussion.
