Topic: Southern Politics
We welcome responses from on-campus and off
before, during, and after Southern Cultures Week.
Our topic for this year suggests that there is something different about
politics in the South. Do you think that's true?
Here are some other questions to consider:
- Tennessee has three potential candidates for President in the 2000
election: Gore, Thompson, and Alexander. Are they "Southern politicians,"
or exceptions to the rule?
- Former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill used to say, "All politics are
local." Is that true in the South--are local politics more important than
state or national?
- In the end, is
it "good ol' boys" who get elected in the South, or is it the people with
ideas? Can women be "good ol' boys"?
- How soon will we see a black senator (or governor, other than Douglas
Wilder) from a
Southern state?
- Is it harder for a woman to be elected senator (or governor) from a
Southern state?
Please respond to any of the above questions, or ignore them
entirely and respond to the responses which you will find below.
Please remember that this is a family show.
