I think the funny thing about the South is that the people up North have no clue what it is really like here. I went to Washington D.C. and New York with a group from school a few years ago. We were asked the typical northern questions...."Did you have to buy those shoes just for the trip"....etc., etc... We were all amazed that these people who were supposed to be so much more cultured than ourselves, really had no clue. At first we thought that the comments were a joke, the funny thing was that they were sincere! They really believed that the people of the south never wore shoes, owned nothing but overalls, and always had a piece of straw hanging out of their mouth. I find the southern way of life one of dignity and of grace. We aren't afraid to enjoy life, take our time, and be ourselves. I wasn't insulted by the comments I heard while up north...I just smiled and thought to myself...we still got all those Yankees fooled, as long as they think we are living in ignorance, they won't be tempted to move down here and mess up our way of life!!
