For past centuries the south has been known for production agriculture. With states like Texas being the second largest state in production agriculture and others like Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee also being very strong in agriculture. The southern traditions of farming and ranching will remain in many families as it has for years. However, there are other aspects of agriculture that are changing and will continue to change in the 20th century. For example, biotechnology is becoming a huge part of agriculture in the south. In todays growing society farmers must be able to produce more food at a faster pace because of our growing population. Methods such as BT corn and soybeans, which are genetically altered crops are being tested and used in states all over the south. This is just one of the many advances that the south has been introduced to. I believe that biotechnology will be a crucial part of southern agriculture in the future.
