Frankly,I do not know about the Southern culture of the U.S.well because I am just an international student. Therefore, I have a lot of troubles to write an essay or to talk with this kind of subjets. I know just some facts of the Southern culture. AS most people said here, most South regions are agriculture areas, like Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Big cities and huge population are not found these areas. People told me that Memphis is the biggest city in Tennessee. Maybe it is a big city because of its population, six hundred thousand. However, i never feel that it is a big city. When I went to the downtown area of Memphis a year ago, I felt a disappointment. It was so smaller than i expected. I could not believe it is the beggest city of Tennessee. In the South, I think there are two specific character compared to other regions. One is that the Spanish culture is developed a lot. Another is that the Southern region has more black population than any other regions. If you go to Miami area in Florida or Southern Texas area, you will be able to see Spanish using people easily. Huge Latin American people moved to the Southern region of the U.S. from their own coutries, such as Mexico, Cuba, and Caribbean countries in 1950's - 1990's. A representative Latin culture developed city, Miami has the largest emigrants population from Caribbean countries. In Miami area in Florida and Southern Texas area, many people use Spanish rather than English. Also, many African-American live in the South. In other words, Black people's society is so strong here. In UTM case, may be over thirty five percent students are African-American. One more,Music industry is developed in the South region, especially Tennessee. Nashville is the birthplace of country music, and of course Memphis is the home of Evis. I am proud of that.
