I suppose the first "southern" music (other than "Dixie") that
I was really aware of, growing up, was stuff in an old
country music song book that belonged to my father--tunes
like "Hallelujah I'm a Bum." But I can't say that I heard
much of that music, and it was identified as Country, not
Southern. Then in college I began enjoying bluegrass--Doc
Watson, the Dillards, and even the Seldom Scene. After college,
I saw Doc & Merle Watson in New York City.
Also, a college friend had a jug band, which performed
Jim Kweskin jug band tunes almost exclusively; and of course
Kewskin's tunes come from old-time groups like the Memphis
Jug Band.
