When I learned that the theme of Southern Cultures Week was southern music, the first person who automatically popped to mind was Johnny Cash, perhaps this was because I am such a Johnny Cash nut. Who else can cover so many styles with their music? From the mournful ballad "Folsom Prison Blues" to spriritual reverence in "Daddy Sang Bass, Mama Sang Tenor" to raucous humor "A Boy Named Sue", Cash covers them all. The original "man in black" helped to shape the face of country music of yesterday and today. Yet, his sound cannot be described as pure country; instead he mixed sprirituals with a bluesy sound and incredible fiddling to produce a sound that is just Johnny.
