I think the reason that Elvis has gotten so much acclaim is that, before his success, Rock-N-Roll was mainly limited to black artists. His ability to reach mainstream society while still keeping the integrity of the music which he covered or imitated was a rare thing. Many artists, like Pat Boone, were taking Motown hits and hits of black artists and glossing them over and making them acceptable to white audiences. In a society marked by segregation, Elvis played a major role in expanding the music industry and influencing future musicians.
