While I have always tried to steer clear of things such as country music, I have come to realize that "Sounds of the South" is so much more than that. It is not just a form of music, or an accent, or a way of communicating. It is a culture. I now pay more attention, not just to how something is said, but the way that it is said. Through southern sounds I have come to appreciate a different ways of thinking and living. Sure, country music is a bit too slow and sad for my blood, but the lyrics and rhythms still deserve praise. I have even come to enjoy blue grass music. The plucking of banjos and the sweet melody of violins mixed in with the powerful guitar and striking drums strangely appeals to me. To me, nothing could be more southern. As for Elvis, I believe that he is the perfect universal symbol for the southern's eclectic musical culture. He mixed all of it's best elements, from country to gospel to the blues to rock and roll. He represents the southern sound so well. This culture is so rich and varied, I feel proud to take part in it.
