When I think about the sound of the south, I think about the typical sounds you hear in the south that you aren't able to hear anywhere else. If you go outside on a Fall day, you are likely to hear the roar of combines harvesting corn or the sound of country music from one of the craft fairs which are so common in the south. If you listen closely on a summer day, you can hear the sound of lawnmowers or people splashing around in swimming pools.
The other Southern sound I think about is the sound of the way Southern people talk. We have a language that is all our own. Some of the words that are common to us include "ain't" and "ya'll." We also use double negatives and take words that would normally mean one thing and change their meaning entirely. This makes us seem dumb in the eyes of the people of the North, but we think they sound dumb when they say things like "pop" instead of Coke and "you guys" instead of "ya'll."
