Being from up North I cannot comment first hand about what a "Southern" family is really like. But from my own experiences I have to say that up North most children are given greater freedoms to roam and learn on their own. Whereas, down South, I get the impression that most children, ESPECIALLY GIRLS, are more sheltered. I have also been told by many people (all who are Southerners themselves), that Southerners are raised to be less arrogant and more laid back than Northerners. I can agree with the laid back part but I strongly disagree with the arrogant idea. I think that Northerners as a whole are just more aggressive and unfortunately lead a faster paced lifestyle. Like most Yankees, when I think of the South I get the immediate image of a small town with close knit families, which is not always true. The populations and lifestyles differ greatly between the North and South. And these extremes are what make both regions unique and desirable to both the native and the tourist.
