International Business Scholars Program

Although West Tennessee contains 142 foreign operations from 18 different countries that employ over 20,000 people, residents of this area remain largely unaware of the global dimension of the regional and state economy.  Over 50% of UT Martin's student body is comprised of first-generation college students drawn primarily from the 21 counties of rural West Tennessee.  Many of these students have never traveled far beyond Tennessee borders.  By encouraging and subsidizing international travel, UT Martin's Business and International Education Program will raise awareness of and interest in global issues and provide opportunities for faculty and students within the College of Business and Public Affairs (as well as West Tennessee business leaders) to expand their horizons and make global connections.

Travel Scholarships

Dr. Tom Payne, Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking, was instrumental in obtaining this grant (see Dr. Payne's Webpage: "Activities of the Chair" for details) and now enjoys the position of "granting" travel scholarships funded through this initiative to hopeful undergraduates.  Students must be currently pursuing a major or minor in a business field and must be willing to seek academic credit for a specific business course through their international experience.

Any student desiring to incorporate a global perspective into his/her business education should undertake the following steps:

1) Talk to his/her advisor about travel interests as soon as possible.
2) Find out about upcoming trips by visiting Dr. Stan Sieber's
UTM Travel Study Home Page.
3) Meet with all professors sponsoring trips that are of interest.
4) Follow this link to download a
Travel Scholarship Application.  Submit this completed form, along with a printout of a current CAPP report from "Banner," to the office of Dr. Tom Payne, 109 Business Administration Building.
