readings to give students an acquaintance with important personalities,
movements, and ideas in French literature. 381: Beginning to 17th
century. This course can also be offered for graduate
credit. All texts studies will be other than those studied in the
recent offering of French 311. Curriculum orientation is chronological
after our innitiation in "Explication de Texte". The web site is your
text book, linking you to all texts, activities and

Objectives: Learn "explication
de texte" to frame and organize observations about literature and
evolve toward writing proficiancy goal. Read selected representative
literary works and historical/cultural orientation texts, answering
questions in comlete written French sentences, to be read out loud
also. As a major component of our study of French culture, we will read
documents and underscore passages showing France's linguistic diversity
and how those in power worked to mitigate and sometimes to surpress it.
Strategies: Read all
assignments and give appropriate prepared answers in clear French to
homework questions in class. Be willing to try unrehearsed discussion
in class. Write
an explication de texte for each French literary time period (3). Grade
Determination: participation = 100. 3 time-period tests (=3 x
200), 3 explications de texte (=3 x 100). Total =1000 points.
General & Ethical Expectations:
We expect students to demonstrate a solid work ethic, and to conduct
themeselves as ladies and gentlemen, with special attention given to
the "Standards of Conduct" and "Academic Integrity" sections of
