Though Jean Bodel's
classifications were limited, it is not difficult to associate the
"Matière de Bretagne" with a massive body Arthurian narrative.
Its often quest or magic-centered scenarios must have been a dominent
cultural feature, as its reception history in recent times and a large
number of surviving literary documents in medieval manuscripts seems to
indicate. Our French medieval manuscript series has already focused on
Arthurian themes in the following pages: Chrestiens de Troyes
Textual Sources of French Vernacular Grail Stories Textual Sources of Vernacular French Tristan Stories Rather than a theme focus, the present page simply makes availablle manuscripts containing as many of the other medieval arthurian stories told in the gallo-roman vernaculars as could be located online (over 120), including a few just naming knights, describing armor, and blasons. These are supported, where possible, with transcriptions, editions and translations of the stories, bibliographies, lexical works and, in some cases, whole-work studies. Manuscripts are listed alphabetically, by city, library, collection and number. Since, in many cases, we are working with manuscript descriptions derived from those of source libraries, where attribution is at issue (ie. Map, Pseudo-Map), we have decided not to include autor names. There is a list of partial facsimiles, supporting transcriptions, editions and translations, ARLIMA bibliographies, and other relevant resources, including analyses, manuscript studies, dictionaries, and more. This page is part of the Andy Holt Virtual Library's "Manuscripts of Medieval France with Vernacular Texts", a collection of over 1100 links to manuscript facsimiles, which will include nearly all of the French medieval literarary canon, and much more. |
