Activity Based Physics and Astronomy Summer Institute for Middle and Junior-High School Teachers: Technology Version, Year Four, June 5-9, 2006

The Institute will consist of:

v     hands-on activities

v     discussion sessions

v     laboratory experiments with technology (Vernier LabPro System)

v     building experiment set-ups

v     demonstrations

v     unit and lesson plan writing that promotes scientific inquiry

 

Teachers participating in the workshop will receive:

v     a $250 stipend

v     a teacher kit worth approximately $1400

v     meals and housing for the week

v     computer simulations

Activities/teaching strategies in the areas of:

              

Measurement----length, volume, area, units, conversions, etc.

Motion—speed, displacement, graphing, using Vernier LabPro data collection system

Waves---- (amplitude&energy, sound), using LabPro

Force----concept of force, Newton’s laws, buoyancy, using LabPro

Electricity---charge, circuits

Astronomy----Earth, moon, Sun, building a telescope, eclipses

v     Hands-on sessions

v     Multimedia Sessions

v     Lesson plan development/sharing in Teams
