I was intrigued by the exhibit in the museum about how UTM came to have Captain Skyhawk as its mascot. Prior to 1960 UTM did not have a mascot since all universities were recognized by their colors. We had the same colors of orange and white as UT Knoxville so the university was known as "Baby Vols". We distinguished ourselves from UTK by adopting a whiskey jug with a corn stalk stopper as our symbol. The jug was orange and white and it was taken to all sporting events and graduations at UTM. In the early sixties we adopted the Tennessee Walking Horse, better known as the Pacer, as our mascot. It was also about this time that the university changed its school colors to orange and blue. The majority of people did not have a clear understanding about a Pacer so we decided to change our immage again. In the early 90s we officially adopted Captain Skyhawk as our school mascot.
