French Moments in Arizona History:
1776 – Théodore de Croix became Commander General of the
Interior Provinces of New Spain
1830s – French trappers in Arizona, after beaver
1851 through the first two decades of the twentieth century, church
hierarchy and most parish priests in Arizona and New Mexico were from
France (Florence Parish).
1865 – Maximilian’s French troops land at the port of Guaymas, forcing
a fast pace refugee flight North into Arizona
1878 to 1883 – John C. Frémont, son of a French tutor, former
explorer and US senator from California, served as the governor of the
Arizona Territory. - French priests are prominent in establishing
Catholic education in Phoenix.
