The medieval term "roman" is related to the description "en roman", meaning that works themselves were in a vernacular language ("in rusticam romanum linguam"). Words like "roman" and "romancier" were very strongly tied to their roots until the seventeenth century, in such a way that many misconstrue the what Boileau means in a famous couplet of his Art poétique: "Villon sut le premier, dans ces siècles grossiers / Débrouiller l'art confus de nos vieux romanciers". On this page I will link long narrative fiction, leaving epic, hagiographic and shorter narrative for another section. Texts, critical biography, and commentary are listed under author or title categories. The work of Chrétien de Troyes, with so many links, is a category unto itself. There are over 160 links in this comprehensive collection.
