Needs French
AATF
ADVOCACY FACT PACK FOR MICHIGAN
In April of 2006, Michigan took
the bold step of making foreign-language study a general requirement
for graduation from high school. The state that led this country
to a technological revolution in the beginning of the last century
prepares now to lead it through a true internationalization of its work
force in this one. As Michigan take its first proud steps with this new
curriculum, those of us who teach French would like to make available
connections with people and organizations who believe in the value of
learning French and studying the many cultures in the many countries
where it is spoken. We also want to suggest some reasons for learning
this language, which are firmly grounded in Michigan's history and
economic realities.

FRENCH MOMENTS IN MICHIGAN HISTORY
During the Civil War, the Canadian dollar was still on a gold basis.
While the American Federal Government printed millions in greenbacks,
the U.S. dollar depreciated in value and Canadians could buy farms in
Michigan at bargain prices.
1615 - Champlain, in company with the Franciscan friar, Joseph le
Caron, and other Frenchmen, discovered the Georgian bay of Lake Huron
1615 Champlain accompanied by an interpreter, Etienne Brulé, one
other Frenchman, and ten Indians, made an expedition to the Huron
region of Lake Manatouline
1618 - French explorer Étienne Brulé
landed at the narrows of Sault Ste. Marie
1621 - Etienne Brulé traveled as far west as the Keweenaw
Peninsula.
1634 - Jean Nicolet, French explorer, traveled across Lake Huron to the
straits of Michilimackinac, into Lake Michigan.
1654 - Médard Chouart Des Groseilliers crossed from east to west
over the bottom part of what is now Michigan, also down most of the
length of the Saint Joseph River.
1660 - French Missionaries arrived and established a mission at
Keweenaw Way
1666 - Claude Allouez, a Jesuit missionary, arrived in the Green
Bay area
1668 - Father Jacques Marquette established the first permanent
settlement of Michigan at Sault Sainte Marie.
1669 - French explorer Adrien Joliet was guided down the St.
Clair-Detroit waterway by an Iroquois Indian.
1670 - Father Claude Dablon journeyed from his Ojibway mission at Sault
Ste. Marie to study the possibility of establishing a mission on
Mackinac Island.
1671 - French fur trappers visit Ile Royal.
1672 - Rene-Robert Cavalier De La Salle traveled down the Saint Joseph
River, trying to find the easiest route between Quebec and the
Mississippi's mouth.
1673 - Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette, fur trader Louis Jolliet
and five voyageurs leave the recently established Indian mission at St.
Ignace (May 17).
1680s - The French built a fort at St, Ignace.
1683 - The French published maps outlining the Great Lakes.
1679 - Robert Cavelier, sieur de La Salle had the "Griffen" built to
sail the Great Lakes. He described the scene at the mouth of the
Detroit River.
1691 - French built and occupied Fort Saint Joseph on the west bank of
the Saint Joseph River near present day Niles, Michigan
French withdrew the garrison from the fort at near the turn of the 18th
century.
1701 - The Fox and Sauk tribes started to make raids upon the fur
stores of the Potowatomi and the French traders.
1701 - Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded French fort Pontchartrain,
later Detroit (July 17).
1702 - Cadillac's wife, Marie Thérèse, soon moves to
Detroit, becoming one of the first white women to settle in the
Michigan.
1714-1715, French soldiers built Fort Michilimackinac.
1749/52 - Chaussegros de Lery's map shows a grant R. du Grand
Marais-Conner Creek, near Gorsse Pointe.
1754–63 French & Indian Wars

farmed by Nicholas Patemaud.
By the mid-eighteenth century, the French will also occupy forts at
present-day Niles and Sault Ste. Marie.
1800 - French trappers were using Presque ile harbor as shelter from
storms on Lake Huron
