Music at The Heart of Our French Connection

The First French song composed in La Nouvelle France may have been a religious song, written in the Huron language and then translated into French by an Amerindian notary at Quebec City in the seventeenth century. As the French-speaking population grew and diversified, so did the music. However, in my youth you did not hear much French-language music in the U.S., unless it was a kid's song, an opera aria, or you caught a Cajun tune at a festival. But the availability, the access and program information were not the same as now; and so, we check out what we are missing.

The latest surveys show that Americans listen to 26.9 hours of music per week, that we are more and more interested in non-English music, and that our access to this music is growing, through radio, television, and digital media.

Our page contains an ample, though not exhaustive account of American or long-term Francophone expat artists who compose or perform French-language. French-Creole songs, . It also opens a window on the media that is bringing more and more Americans in contact with French-language music, as well as French translations of American songs. It will convince you that Americans do frequently listen to songs in French, and that you are never far from a French-language song.
