TEXTUAL SOURCES AND CANON

For just about all scholars, the first printed edition of François Villon's works made from named medieval and Renaissance manuscripts was J.H.R. Prompsault's Oeuvres de maistre François Villon . . . (Paris: Imprimerie de Béthune, 1832). Of course, there were printed editions beginning in 1489, but the Levet edition used an unnamed source similar to MS. Paris, BNF fonds français 20041, and had pretty much the same poems, stanza and line order. These editions evolved from Gothic to Roman type. When Clément Marot made the first critically commented edition of Villon (1633), he claimed as sources the old printed editions, old men, who had memorized Villon's verse, and natural judgement. There are scores, perhaps hundreds of songs fashioned from Villon’s poems, performed from memorized lyrics. It is impossible to tell how many of Villon’s ballads wound up as the lyrics of late fifteenth and early sixteenth-century songs. We do see his rondel “Mort, j’appelle de ta rigueur” among the song lyrics in three late medieval chansonniers. Rabelais quotes Villon through Panurge in his Quart Livre. Eloy d’Amerval quotes Villon in his Livre de la Diablerie (1608) “However, to be honest, we must admit that much so-called oral tradition can originate from a printed source.

Though Coutelier's edition of Villon (1723) contained a varia lectio, the variants were copied from Gothic printed editions. Perhaps the success of the first printed edition made it difficult for a scholar to dive into a manuscript tradition, where many exemplars were not locatable. Perhaps editors were anxious about attributing works to Villon that were not actually his in manuscripts available to them. Here is a list of attributions which are not part of the current canon agreed upon by most modern scholars, though, in some cases, excellent arguments have been presented for inclusion. It is larger than the corpus of cannonical works presented this year for study to the candidates for the French concours d'agrégation de lettres modernes: 3,194 lines of poetry. Where possible I offer a link to the text of the attributed work.

This is the 3rd Jannet edition, the first being from 1867. Jannet's work has a historical value, missing in previous editions, because of the massive list of attributed works, and because it attempts to reveal something about the editorial tradition of Villon’s works in the 18th century. The problem is that Jannet mistook the notes of Nicolas Lenglet Dufresnoy, from volumes in Paris and London, for the much anticipated edition of Bernard de la Monnoye’s, which never materialized. Editing Villon is a long story. Before the first self-named critical edition of Villon’s poetry, that of Clément Marot in 1533, there were at least 21 printed editions, including 9 before 1500. However, the first scholar to use multiple manuscripts to edit Villon was not Prompsault in 1832, who claimed the honor, but rather Nicolas Lenglet Dufresnoy attempted one between 1735 and 1744. A few years ago, I made an annotated transcription of one of the works in the incomplete edition:

When I began a serious and critical reading of Villon's works in graduate school, I was introduced to the latest critical edition, that of Auguste Longnon, Lucien Foulet and André Lanly, François Villon: Oeuvres (Paris: Honoré Champion, 1970), whose "Sources du texte de Villon" (pp. vi-ix) described ten medieval and renaissance sources, including two early printed books (an edition and anthology). Old and modern editions of Villon's works, with a variety of stanza and line orders, as well as our changing acceptance of canonical poems, are an indication of confusion over the manuscript tradition. In my book-langth bibliography, François Villon: A Bibliography (New York: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1990), there are 22 sources listed along with cited descripytions on pp. 7-39 (20 of them medieval and Renaissance manuscripts). My recently updated

shows twenty-five medieval and renaissance manuscripts as well as incunables containing the text of one or more of Villon's works generally accepted as canonical.

From what we are beginning to see about the manuscript tradition, and a history of printed collections of his works, it is time for a new and detailed history of how Villon has been edited, along with a reexamination of the criteria used in attributing works to him, or that which has been used to eliminate works from the canon. By this, I mean something similar to the work of Professor Mary B. Speer, over forty years ago, in "The Editorial Tradition of Villon's Testament: From Marot to Rychner and Henry.” Romance Philology 31 (1977-78), 544-61, published before the fifth volume of the Rychner and Henry edition, whych only discusses ten sources in volumes published before 1985.

I was happy to see that, in the wake of the 2021 concours d'agrégation de lettres modernes, the baseline of canonical works (Lais, Testament, Poesies diverses) from the 2014 Mülethaler edition were integrated into the Corpus Frantext. Here, we have a widely accepted and official view of what Villon's Oeuvres should look like. It would also be good to see the digitization of transcriptions of Villon's works as they appear in all the sources we have. At that point we could make some important decisions about what characterizes Villon's expression, in order to determine more definitively the possible canonicity of certain works.
