Jessica Shannon
jessica shannon Senior German Student (122 in Spring 2008)

Major(s): Graphic design. German minor.

Interests: painting, drawing, writing, German, Germany, mission work

Why German? My family lived in Germany for four years when I was a child. My adopted "oma" and "opa" taught my dad German. I remember avidly listening in on the lessons. As a child I could understand alot of what they were saying, but was too shy to try to begin to speak German. So, finally after many years I'm learning to speak, read, and write German.

Graduate Student of German (111 in Spring 2008)

Major(s):Master's of Science in Secondary Education (Math, Spanish, and possibly German)

Interests: Law- particularly education & environmental law and civil rights & women's rights issues; MLB Baseball; Harry Potter (more books than films); health & vegetarian diet info; Pomeranian puppies; non-violent animal activism; a variety of music and good books; and I watch the Golden Girls on DVD every night, hehehe.

Why German? So many reasons. Here are a few:
1) I desire to learn other languages and to speak them fluently so I have the credentials to teach languages in the public education systems. I want to know the language rather than possess a bare minimum of vocabulary, which (in my opinon) does a huge a huge disservice to our children. Also, I have an interest in educating ESL students.
2) My husband will be a German major as soon as it is available to him and we hope to rear trilingual children.
3) I will be applying to law school soon and knowledge of languages looks great on one's resume/transcript! :)
4) I want to go to Germany in May! :D
