UTM 10-Day Travel Study Program to Braunschweig, Germany
In mid-May, the German program at UTM conducts its annual 10-day trip to Braunschweig. This is a city of medium size (pop. 240,000), ideally located in central Germany, situated near such attractions as the Harz Mountains, the larger city of Hannover, and the production facilities of such well-known companies as Volkswagen and Jägermeister. In addition, Germany 's largest city and capital, Berlin, is a mere 2 hours away by car or train. The city of Braunschweig itself has a great deal to offer: it is the site of a world-class university, a Cathedral and a great deal of architecture that dates from and before the Middle Ages.
During their visit students stay with host families, where they are able to practice their listening and speaking skills in an authentic, total-immersion setting. Professor Hammond accompanies the group to Braunschweig and remains in the city for the duration of the program in order to provide students with any assistance they may require. This arrangement is intended to provide students with the right balance of independence and supervision/assistance.
Requirements: Participants must have studied German for at least one semester at UTM. Note: a student's application to participate in travel-study to Braunschweig is subject to approval by the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and the Office of Global Studies.
Academic Credit: Students may receive 3 academic credits from UTM for their participation in the 10-day travel study program.
Cost: Approximately $1500
Financial Aid: Participants are eligible for substantial financial aid , including the recently approved SGA Travel Award, and are encouraged to apply for it. In addition, students may elect to pay their balance in installments rather than all at once. Contact Professor Hammond for more details!
