Northwest Tennessee ChapterTennessee Trails AssociationLBL Canal Loop Trip Report |
|
On Feb. 23, 2002, a day with clear blue skies and temperatures nearing 50 degrees, three members of the Northwest Chapter (Nancy Warren, Vivian Norwood, and Jim Clark) along with guest Joe Hayden, ventured out on the Canal Loop at Land Between the Lakes. This trail is a favorite of bicyclists and hikers both, and
it is easy to see why. You can choose lengths varying from 5
to 14 miles (we did about 10), and there are a number of good climbs
as well as nice views of the lakes. The trails starts at the North Visitor's Station and shortly after the beginning crosses the Trace to venture along the banks of Lake Barkley. When it crosses again to the West side, the trail offers nice views of Kentucky Lake and with some nice hills and valleys -- indeed this section was our favorite part of the trail. The views were beautiful on this late winter's day. Only a few other hikers were out on this day. A couple cyclists were seen, but generally speaking we had the trail to ourselves. The only downside to the day was that the low lake levels left a lot of trash to be seen on the shoreline.
